Before the land that became City Park, the beach area was a favorite hangout for swimming by the children of Lakeway and many residents who did not qualify to use the private pools at the Lakeway Inn or the World of Tennis. The beach area was their secret hide-away. The children nicknamed this area the "Flats" in reference to the relatively flat terrain along the beach area. While there were many rumors of typical teenage activities, Sheriff deputies or the police were never called to the site.
Several developers tried to develop this land. Below is the plat proposal a development by the developer Doug Fike. This proposal included 50 condos, a clubhouse, and a 60 slip boat dock. Unfortunately for Mr. Fike, the Austin real estate market collapsed circa 1990; Mr Fike defaulted on his loan that he used to purchase the property. The City of Lakeway was extremely fortunate to purchase this property at a distressed value at this unique time.
We can only imagine how many condos/homes would be on this property had the City not purchased the property; to the detriment of all citizens, present and future!
